As mentioned at Monday night's swim session, next week we will do the first of our Timed Swims.

This year we won't be doing T20s cheers , but CSS tests (Critical Swim Speed, as per Swim Smooth). This will involved a 400 metre (16 lengths) and 200 metre (8 lengths) swim at maximum effort. From this I can work out your CSS, or Aerobic Threshold training time, which you will ALL need for the next training cycle, so please make every effort to come to one session next week.

All sessions next week (w/c 25 Feb, and maybe the following Monday 4th aswell) will be a little different. I can only take a maximum of 30 swimmers per session, and suggest you only come to one session next week, so that we can get CSS times for as many swimmers as possible. The 8pm session on Monday is still the quietest, and is preferable to the 7pm one which is usually full - and remember I can only take 30 at each session next week.

Three lanes will do their CSS first, whilst the other 3 lanes will swim a very easy swim set for half an hour. Then most of you will swap.

The lanes doing CSS will consist of 4 swimmers, 2 will swim whilst the other 2 time-keep. All will warm up together, then 2 swimmers will do 400 metres (side by side - no drafting Wink), then swap; then do 200 metres and swap. I anticipate this will take approx 30 mins if we mix lanes ie: Two Lane 1 swimmers, with two Lane 6 swimmers; Lane 2 with Lane 5; and Lanes 3 and 4 together.

The 3 swim lanes will have 6 swimmers each, but only 4 from each lane will be able to swap for their CSS - so max of 6 swimmers may not be able to do CSS at that session. Note: Any swimmer not yet able to swim 400 metres non-stop will not be required to do a CSS test.

I will have a signing in sheet and will explain when you sign in.

Clear as mud?! scratch I thought so! If you have any questions before next week, just ask and I'll do my best to explain!

Please can ALL swimmers make every effort to attend ONE session next week to do their Timed Swim. This will enable me to work out your Aerobic Threshold Training Time, which you will need for forthcoming training sessions, and I will also sort you all out into the correct lanes.

If you can't make next week, I may be able to do another CSS on Monday 4 March, if there is demand and space. Alternatively, if you could time yourself in a 25m pool, and swim 400m (fast), then have a brief active rest (2 x 100 easy/drills), then do 200m (fast). Send me the results and I'll sort out your AT time, and lane.

Wow! What a great turn out for the timed swims tonight! The results are drying out in the airing cupboard - just hope the ink doesn't disappear! I will input them and get the results to you asap.

It didn't quite go to plan tonight, and I will try doing it a little differently on Thursday.

I think we could take 6 per lane (36 max), but still have 2 at a time doing the timed swim, whilst the others time/scribe for them, then rotate. We won't be doing an additional swim set, just the timed swims, but this will mean less of a rush, and more time for w/up and change-overs.

There may be a separate lane for swim only, but this week the timed swims are the priority.

I will also use a few lanes on Monday to finish the timed swims for those who couldn't get them done this evening.

All the results, and lane allocation, can be found on the main website, under Training, scroll down to Monday's Indoor Swim Session, and click on CSS link, and make sure you scroll down for further information and explanations.

Try to memorise your own time (last column), and half/quarter it for 50/25 metre swims, double it for 200s etc.
