Ironman 70.3 UK 2010 (Wimbleball) - Race Report
Wimbleball Lake in Exmoor is the home of one of the toughest if not the toughest Ironman 70.3 in the world. The UK race consists of
a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run. The mass start lake swim is a triangular anti-clockwise circuit. The bike course is undulating (hilly!) with one or two sharp climbs and one short sharp descent....The run consists of 3 x 4.3 mile laps around the perimeter of the lake.
1500 competitors from all over the country (and abroad) originally entered the race, 1177 (including 26 elites and 17 from our club) started the race at 7am when the sun continuously shone right the way up to 4.30pm (the cut off), by this 1082 competitors had finished.
Frazer Cartmell of Scotland overtook Philip Graves last year's winner to win the men's race for the third . He is now hoping to double up and achieve Phils feat from last year by winning both, at Wimbleball and Bolton. The successful Bella Bayliss won the women’s race, another one to add to her 20 or so top three Ironman finishes.
There were 17 Exeter Tri Club members competing this year, and mostly wearing the new club kit. There were some outstanding performances, in particular Rob Moore and Sally Davies both coming away as winners in their age group category. Congratulations! Well done also to the many who competed and completed their first Ironman 70.3. I was one of those, so I will continue this thread with a post of an account of my race.
In the meantime, here are the results of the members who raced in this amazing event.
Please message me if I left anybody off the list, so I can amend. Also do add any good photos or an account of your race to this thread
If you wish to enter next years Ironman 70.3 UK, be quick as entries are already open (they opened on Wednesday) , places filled up within 5 days last year. It’s likely to fill up even quicker this year, as more people will be coming back to do it again next year, I’m sure. The event is not cheap, it costs £170 BTA (£175 Non-BTA), buts its well worth it, once you cross that finish line!...(speak to the ones who have done it.)
