Does anyone fancy some one off long sea swims when the sea warms up to chilly?

I just need to go l o n g (but not at a super speed), and I'd prefer to train in OW than a pool.

I'll ask around. x

Got three interested, Karen Lubbe, Lizzie Mason and Paul Hitt.

Don't think I'm up to Amanda's speed tho'! I'm more of a plodder! If there are enough of us, we could split into similar ability groups.

Hi Kate

Are you talking IM distance type training? And all F/C? I could be up for that if so and know someone else that could be in. My racing season starts end of May as I'm going over seas, so earlier than most OW here. Would like to get some decent pace swims in.

Hi Kate

Just had a thought. Exmouth SC Open Water group do long sea swims during the summer, starting at Budleigh. They usually have some swimmers training for Channel swims etc, so they do lots of distance. They train Tues and Thurs evenings (7pm?), and Sunday morning 11am from about May to Sept (depending on weather). Contact Ian Lang for info: itlang@btinternet.com.

Thanks for the replies, basically I will go as long as anyone wants (and is safe of course)... yes I'm talking a couple of hours, or more if I get any takers. I have to work up to just over seven miles.

The thing is that I am not fast, I've got very good endurance now, but speed in swimming is something that I'll never find.

I guess the faster swimmers could just go ahead then peel off and come back etc.. or 2 groups?

I really don't mind how it's organised, Karen you will know better than me how it could be done?

I would just appreciate the company!

Hi

I'll be trying to do some long o/w swims at Teignmouth (other than club days) either morn or eve on a regular basis - if anyone ends up going that side of Exeter I'd me keen to meet up

Regards

When are you planning to start ??

Whats a sensible temperature to start o/w swimming?? - Teignmouth is 9.2 deg C today, I may try a test swim when the clocks go forwards

I raced in Austria last May, and am doing so again this year - so last year I was in the water from April, will be doing the same this year. Not sure I'd say any earlier than that, it was still cold in April, but it was a bit warmer to change afterwards in the carpark. On cloudy or overcast days it made it much colder and we certainly suffered more.

LOL! You're all keen to get in the sea aren't you!

I went in in January this year. Sea temp was 8-9 degrees - and it was FAR too cold to swim! And that's rare for me to say!

I'd say wait til May (Bank Holiday). That's when the Dover Harbour swims start - for those planning on swimming the Channel Laughing And it's also when our Teignmouth Club swims usually start.

I would like to get some in and may also be able to assist with kayak cover on some occasions.

We should be mindful that if it is deemed an organized club thing then the safety measures need to be in place. If it isnt then everyone needs to be aware it is entirely their own risk.

There should be a repeat of the Dart Swim ( 10k) in Sept which a few of us plan to do as an end of season crazy . If anyone wants to plan daytime swims post June I will have time. Roll on the summer and get out of that pool!!
