Advice on First Bike Empty Advice on First Bike

Hi

I've just joined the club and this will be my first attempt at Triathlon training. I've mountain biked for some years but obviously now need a road bike.

I haven't got designs on being a super athlete as I'm coming back from cancer and want to do this as part of my goals for fitness so I'm looking for a comfortable yet competitive bike.

I've been looking at the Specialised Secteur Elite/Comp - has anyone got any views on this or recommendations as an alternative first bike for the sport? (and general training/enjoyment road riding)

Has anyone got a bike they want to sell? [the Cervelo is too expensive for me!]

Hi JB

I've just completed my first season in Tri, and got myself a Trek 1.2 Alpha (about £600). Absolutely love it! Makes such a difference having a proper road bike!

I'd recommend going in to somewhere like the Bike Shed, Exeter, and trying out a few in your price range. Husband did this, and then bought the same bike as me! His and Hers matching bikes! Cute!!!! LOL!

Good luck, and I'm sure you'll love triathlon!

Thanks for the advice and encouragement Karen. Someone has come up with the offer of a Cannondale Caad 9 Cross bike so I think it's down to getting out and testing some.

Martin at the Bike Shed was really helpful so I'll follow you suggestion and take him up on his offer of some test rides.

Many thanks
JB

Hi JB
What size are you after? I have a lovely year old orbea onix for sale (54cm).

My winter training bike is a specialized allez and totally noticed the difference when upgrading to carbon. Depends how much you are looking to spend, but I personally would go carbon if you can. Saves having to upgrade again when you get the bug.

Let me know if you fancy having a look at mine.

Thanks for the heads up on both the bikes. I had tried an Orbea and it was a really nice ride. I went for a Specialised Secteur Comp in the end. Really enjoying it but need more time in the saddle to enjoy it some more with added fitness. Looking forward to the spring evening sessions and seeing you there.
